WELCOME!

THIS WIKI IS FOR PARENTS, STUDENTS, AND ANYONE INTERESTED IN WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH THE GIFTED EDUCATION PROGRAM AT RIPLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL.

For those of you new to Ripley Middle School, my name is Tiffany Powers and I am the Gifted Specialist here.

As participants in the Gifted Program, students have several options as far as programming.  They may participate in one aspect or all three.

Presently, we offer Gifted Reading as a replacement Reading class for 6, 7, & 8th graders.

This means that the student would see me for Reading instead of the general educator.

We also offer acceleration in the area of Math.  Students who meet all of the eligibility requirements may opt to

be accelerated to the next grade level Math class.  If this path is chosen as a 6th grader, it is possible for students to leave the

Middle School having already completed Algebra I and Geometry which would give them 2 high school credits.

We also offer Academic Enrichment to all Gifted Students here at Ripley Middle. Enrichment is one period throughout the day

that the students see me and we participate in several activities.  The most time-consuming activity is the publishing of

"The Viking Pride," our school newspaper.  Also during this time, we study the art of debate, we concentrate heavily on the world around us

and current events, and participate in critical thinking and problem-solving activities.

The goal of Gifted Education is to ENRICH and ACCELERATE the learning experiences of those students who fall into the superior

categories of ability and achievement.  It is NOT my personal belief, that this involves EXTRA work.

My philosophy is to stretch and challenge their comfort zones with the material and analysis of the material, not with the amount of material.

I am a strong advocate for The Arts in Education, and I truly believe it is important to expose my students to all forms of art and expression.  I constantly include aspects of the visual and performing arts in our curriculum, along with our literature (which is also an ART!).

My students and their parents are always welcome and free to contact me at any time here at school or on my cell phone.

Now, let's explain this WIKI.  There will be a link at the bottom of this page for each class.  Hopefully, you will find information about assignments, novels, upcoming events, etc on the individual pages.
